Important Considerations when Establishing an Environmental Objective
Realistic : Both management and employees must feel that the targets can be achieved within the determined time scale without overstretching resources.
Specific : Details of the project must be clear enough for staff members to follow.
Measurable : To allow for an evaluation of progress and measurement of success.
Challenging : To motivate staff members to strive for continuous improvement.
Consistent with organisational objectives : Targets set should deliver real benefits to the organisation and should not conflict with its organisational interests.
Corporate-wide : To allow for far-reaching achievement through the concerted efforts of all members of the organization.
Example of Environmental project
An environmental programme to reduce water consumption in a textile finishing plant.
Significance:
The use of water in a textile finishing plant is very high, especially for rinsing processes. There are therefore several areas that need to be studied before implementing an improvement programme, such as current water bills, trend of production volumes, design of textile machinery and the availability of other supporting facilities. The improvement programme should involve staff from different departments, such as production line, facilities and environmental improvement committee members.
Objective
Reduce water consumption at a textile finishing plant
Target
Re-design the textile machinery and install new wastewater treatment facilities. The target of the programme is to achieve a 10% reduction in water usage by the fourth quarter of 2011.
Environmental Management Programme
Collect the previous 12 months’ water bills & production volumes, study the trend of peak and off-peak seasons of production and the feasibility of improvement methods.
Start Date
1/5/2011
End Date
14/12/2011
Expected Results
To reduce water use consumption by 10% by end of 2010
